BA Furniture & Product Design
Anthony Rae
I am inspired to design by the people and spaces around me. I enjoy modelmaking and focus my design process on iterative prototyping to understand how a design interacts with people and spaces. I use this to develop and refine all the little details which build up a design.
The Brute Table Lamp
The Brute table lamp exploits the process of crushing tubes to create a light that creates a warming atmosphere. The change in profiles provides an interesting surface that, when light is projected over them, casts shadows and reflects light for an original light quality. The design is intended to provide a small warming light on a side table, allowing a user to feel comfortable and relaxed. The Brute uses a touch sensor intended to make the lamp easier to place in a room, as the user doesn't need to consider where the wire and switch sit. The colours of the lamp collection have also been selected carefully to stand out in a neutral-toned space without overwhelming that space with overly bold colour choices.
The Signal Lantern
The Signal Lantern is a portable light designed to be interacted, played with and moved around a space. The warming light offered by the lantern is aimed to allow users to work in a comfortable environment. The Lantern was designed for Habitat and subsequently follows Terence Conran?s hallmarks of good design, meaning that the form is simple yet functional, being made beautiful by the soft elegant form of the fabric cover. The Lantern is made from 100% recyclable materials as well as being easy to disassemble, allowing the user to easily replace parts and dispose of them. The fabric cover is machine washable at 30 degrees, meaning that any marks made from the constant interaction with the user can easily be removed with a single wash.
