Geoprene
Each year, an estimated 8,380 tons of wetsuits contribute to landfill each year and poses significant cancer risks to nearby residents due to the toxicity of the neoprene plants. Shockingly, a survey conducted in 2024 revealed that over 72% of respondents had never considered the environmental impact of wetsuits which makes the problem hidden from view to the public. Although strives in tackling this problem with Circular Flow, who specialise in wetsuit recycling, partners with renowned brands to transform wetsuit material into innovative products like yoga mats and bags. However, wetsuits cannot be recycled into new wetsuits.
This project is aimed to be the next step in the recycling process, to design a Gillet using wetsuit material with a focus on a stylish, comfortable design. Enter Canggu, and the product Geoprene, lined with wetsuit material for insulation and crafted with recycled polyester for the exterior. This waterproof Gillet is manufactured in the UK, using over 95% recycled materials, and saves two wetsuits from ending up in landfill.
