BA Product Design
James Suri
I am a designer who is passionate about creating products which evoke emotion and thought. I enjoy allowing aesthetic-based decisions to drive my design process, whilst factoring consumer behaviour to solve problems and create a meaningful experience.
The Curve Chair
The increase in the cost of living within the UK means that furnishing a modern interior has become very expensive. There are limited high quality upholstered products for mid-price points within the market due to high cost of manufacturing. Minimalistic, wabi-sabi is a growing trend however products of this style are either very expensive or too abstract for the average home.
The design language of this flowing curved chair was to embody an aura of elegance, sophistication, and perceived luxury, seamlessly blending form and function to create a visually striking piece, oozing elegance.
Perceived luxury goes beyond material wealth, combining design finesse, attention to detail, and consumer perception. Unlike traditional luxury, which relies on high production costs for exclusivity, perceived luxury achieves high-end aesthetics while prioritizing low-cost manufacturing. Aesthetic decisions aimed at cultivating user emotions such as confidence, relaxation, and power. By creating an elegant and sophisticated product within a budget, an illusion of opulence that appeals to consumers seeking both style and affordability, can be provided. Perceived luxury presents items as sumptuous indulgences, showing that sophistication doesn't always come with a hefty price tag.
Scouts Go
Scouts Go is a smartphone app for children aged between 4-18. It will be connected to the Scouts programme, offering a similar experience from the palm of the user?s hand. This was an exciting project to undertake as I was a Scout when I was younger. The app will have activities for the user to complete and all the relevant information for said task. The user will complete these activities, either alone or preferably with friends and family. By completing activities, the user will earn and collect digital rewards, similarly to how Scouts collect physical badges. Physical Activity Packs will be sent to the user to help them complete their task as well as Including a scannable AR token. The app will utilise augmented reality as the user confirms the tasks that they have been completing, by photographing their progress with tasks, and with collecting award icons as activities are completed. The app is bright, bold and tailored for child use in every aspect.
