Designing to solve a problem through analysis of data to create a solution is a key interest of mine. I thoroughly enjoy creating products which will make a difference to the user and the world, especially within the medical and sustainability sectors.
CogniTech Pneumatic Resistance System
With >50% of stroke survivors affected by hand contractures post-stroke, it felt necessary to design an adjustable at-home rehabilitation product to help the user regain hand functionality. A stroke can cause signal imbalances between the brain and hand muscles, where over time the hand slowly clenches inwards into a fist position. Hand contractures severely impact the affected person's daily routine, creating challenges with cooking, eating, washing, personal hygeine, and more.
The CogniTech Pneumatic Resistance System (CPRS) aims to loosen up clenched hands through a combination of air pumps, solenoids, and soft robotics. Once the ergonomically designed palm insert is slotted into the users hand, a tactile dial can be turned to an intensity setting which they feel most comfortable with. From here, the inflation chamber works in a breathing motion of controlled inflation, hold, and deflation for 20 cycles; providing adequate stretch to the tightened muscles in an attempt to regain hand functionality. Although further testing is required, with user dedication and correct usage, the device has the potential for stimulating neuroplasticity (rewiring of the brain to the hand for full recovery).
Flip Lamp
With hybrid working on the rise, young adults may seek an all in one solution for task based and environment lighting within their home office. Introducing Flip®, a modernist styled lamp utilising gyro sensors to determine whether a cool 5000K or a warm 2500K output is emitted. Magnets snap the lamps’ head into an upwards or downwards facing position, providing either efficient lighting for office working or ambient lighting for a cosy environment. The RP2040 Micro-controller responds to signals sent by the LSMDS0X Sensor when in motion, to prevent the user from damaging their eyes when switching lighting positions. Made from 304 Stainless Steel, Flip® aims to provide product longevity through sustainable
durability.
